Springtime, Making Space
for What Matters
Spring is upon us. It’s my favorite time of year for a few reasons. Aside from all the beautiful flowers blooming, it’s a time of new beginnings. A time when we should pause for a moment and look outside. What do you see? What brings a smile to your face? Guess what? Those things are always there. They were waiting for you to pause and notice them. This is also a time of Lent. Lent is when we are supposed to create a space in the middle of life’s responsibilities to appreciate what’s always there, such as God’s presence. I’ve tried to teach my boys that Lent isn’t to “better” your life but to center your world on what matters most, such as living your life more like Christ on behalf of what he has sacrificed for you. It’s about finding one thing to do better and then beginning that one thing and making it a part of your daily life for years to come. Like the Lenten season, Spring is about making space for what matters.
In October of last year, I began a six-month intensive Masters Wellness and Nutrition Coaching program in the middle of my life’s chaos. It was essential for several reasons, so I made space for it. I wasn’t sure how in the world I would pull it off, but with prayer and perseverance, I did. It came to me through a good friend I adore and respect precisely when I needed it. And, you know, there are no mistakes in life. Plus, I knew that if she was associated with it, then it was something I needed to explore. As Spring approaches, I completed the program this month, smack dab at the beginning of new beginnings. How exciting is that? When I took this on, I didn’t realize how it would challenge me on my toughest days but become a way of support to keep me moving forward when I wanted to crawl into bed and pull the covers over my head. I can not wait to share and coach clients in ways that will truly change their lives both soulfully and nutritionally. Everything works together for the greater good of our health. Much like everything God does in our lives works together for our greater good.
I knew that life was a balancing act. To be your best self, you must balance certain things, nutritionally, spiritually, and physically, to the best of your ability. I have been saying this to my pilates clients, friends, and family for as long as I can remember. In my life, however, I took for granted all the areas that required such balance for each place to remain balanced. After recognizing that in my own life, I was holding on to something that was taking from me much more than it ever gave. I’m undoubtedly clear on that concept now. Most of us think that if we eat healthy, exercise, and de-stress whenever possible, all will be right with the world. We continue to push our minds, bodies, and souls day in and day out to limits that affect our health in irreparable ways. Why do we do this? It’s like the hamster on the wheel. I was getting nowhere fast. And indeed not good for any of us. Discovering where I was missing the mark almost daily was eye-opening and has genuinely changed my life. I had the basics down. But as far as living consciously, nurturing myself, loving more, sleeping more profoundly, and stressing less. It was hit or miss, and this was taking from my health in ways I didn’t realize. Each of these areas, including nutrition, is connected to the others, and they work simultaneously to create that balance we’re striving for. Without one, the others don’t work. That is the beauty in this amazing body that God designed for us. Although I know it’s not for everyone, one more area of my life that is a priority is my relationship with God. It sits at the top of all the others, for without him and that relationship, none of the other areas genuinely matter. So I’ve added that one to the top of my list.
What’s so wonderful about Spring is that much like the Lenten season, where we remember a painful death on our behalf and a beautiful life rising for us. Springtime can also be a new beginning where we can look at the lifestyle and behaviors in our lives that need attention and do those things better, just like with Lent, where we start with just one of those areas and make room for positive change. We can then make it a part of our daily life, moving forward and centering our energy on what matters most to become the healthiest version of ourselves—making space for what’s truly important so that we can rise daily and live our best, beautifully balanced life.
I implore you to look outside during this lenten season and every day and find one thing to acknowledge and appreciate. Maybe it’s as simple as a blooming flower, a cute pup walking by your house daily, or even a friendly neighbor who waves hello. Be grateful for all of it and smile.
I encourage you to do the same with your body, mind, and soul. Stop and look in the mirror, see who you are today, and envision whom you want to become. Dig deep. Are you living a balanced life? Are there areas of your life you are just running on the hamster wheel, getting nowhere fast? Take that one step forward and add a step each day, week, or month. Become that person you deserve to be for yourself, and God, if he’s your thing. Become nutritionally sound and soulfully complete.
When you’re ready, I’m here for it. Let’s do it together. If I can complete all this coursework during the most challenging times of my life, you can certainly achieve great success in yours one step at a time, and I can’t wait to watch you blossom.
May your Spring be filled with inspiration and new healthy, happy beginnings. You were created for great things. I know this to be true.
Much Love,
Kim
